Directs and coordinates the day to day administrative and nursing functions of all nursing units during specific shift; oversees the professional performance of nursing personnel and promotes optimal standards of nursing care. As delegated by the Vice President of Behavioral Health, supervises hospital activities generally. Reports to Director of Patient Care Services for Behavioral Health Services. Has a collaborative relationship with Nurse Managers for Psychiatry and Chemical Dependency.



Must be a graduate of an accredited school of nursing, with additional courses in nursing administration preferred. At least two years of previous experience as a head nurse or supervisor is desired. Two years clinical experience with demonstrated skills in nursing and administrative personnel management is required. The successful candidate must demonstrate ability to recognize patients’ individual needs based on medical conditions, age (infants, pediatrics, adolescents, young adults, middle aged, and geriatric), limitations and planned procedures. Must possess leadership ability, and be able to work in multidisciplinary setting with diplomacy, dependability and confidentiality. This position requires good oral and written communication skills; sound decision making skills with creativity, initiative and integrity. This position has been determined to have a high risk of occupational exposure to blood-borne pathogens.


Directs and coordinates the activities of the nursing department on assigned shift.

Informs department head or administrator, when appropriate, of critically ill patients, serious incidents, problems in the physical plant, and all situations such as fire or disasters requiring administrative action.

Performs administrative and/or department head duties in their absence administering policies fairly and equitably.

Keeps the patient census updated for accuracy.

Staff nursing units appropriately.

Assures employee cooperation and compliance with hospital/department polices and procedures.

Maintains established departmental policies and procedures, objectives, quality assurance program, safety, environmental and infection control standards.

Maintains currency in professional/technical areas pertaining to nursing.

Coordinates Court Commitments through Chancery Courts and interacts closely with local law enforcement.

First line response to code 446, code 99, code red, elopements, suicide attempts and other events concerning the safety of patients and staff.

Ensures the confidentiality of all patients, past and present.

Collaborates with intake and assessment to determine patient’s needs.

Collaborates with the medical staff for patient placement and clinical acuity.

Gives and receives report on all patients in house.

Understands personal and departmental role in hospital’s fire, safety and disaster plans.

Supports and interprets hospital’s Christian mission, philosophy and objective.

Maintains confidentiality of patients and other pertinent information.

Enhances professional growth and development through participation in educational programs, current literature, inservice meetings, and workshops. Attends meetings as required.

Represents behavioral health services to referral sources, community agencies, social services agencies and others as requested.
